I first heard the news from ABS CBN: A three year old boy from Negros Occidental died after being tagged along by his mother to join a hunger strike.

According to the news, doctors from the Cadiz District Hospital confirmed that the child died because of cardio-respiratory arrest caused by “severe dehydration, pneumonia and malnutrition”. 13 families went on a hunger strike to demand for the release of 13 hacienda workers for alleged illegal logging.

I pity the farmers’ families but I am greatly disgusted to know mothers would bring along their children, much more a three year old child, to a hunger strike. There are ways to demand for the release of their husbands but at least not to the point of sacrificing the welfare of their children.

Some Filipino children are unfortunate indeed, they do not only work at a young age, their welfare and their rights are also ignored. Perhaps we Filipinos really need to be taught how to value and respect the rights of the Filipino children.
