It was not Jaden Smith’s hit movie The Karate Kid that prompted us to enroll Kulay to a karate class. It was some bullies in school.
Grade School Bullies
A week or so ago, my son told me how two grade five pupils bullied him in school. I’m thankful that my son always shares what happens in school but it’s really painful- awfully painful to know that some grade older kids picked on my 6 year old son. I was crying with anger and hardly slept the night. I wanted to know and see those kids myself, reprimand them and verbally hurt them myself. Early in the morning, I tried to call a younger relative who might have an idea who those bullies are. I already have a name even before my husband woke up.
A Better Solution
I was planning to threaten those kids myself or even come face to face with their parents but then I realized revenge is not the solution. I decided to see the Prefect of Discipline instead and requested her to deal with the kids accordingly.
When I fetched Kulay from school for lunch, I learned from him that right after recess time, he was accompanied to Grade 5 classrooms where he pinpointed the two bullies who were then brought to the Office of the Prefect of Discipline. School prefects are not the most adorable of the school faculty but on that day, I found myself thankful that there are personnel who are in charge of disciplining children in schools.
Karate for Defense
By evening, it was decided that Kulay will be enrolled to a Karate class. We always remind him not to use karate stuff to intimidate and start a fight with kids though. Nevertheless, the advice always ends up with this line “pero pag inunahan kang saktan, sipain mo kaagad; pag mas malaki, magsumbong ka sa teachers!”
