Just a few weeks ago, last April 30 to be exact, my husband and I had an appointment with a swimming instructor. We enrolled our four year old son Kulay for a swimming lesson but since our son also has his painting classes scheduled MWF, we requested the instructor that Kulay will have his swimming classes every Tuesday and Thursday.

My son can be very hard headed and difficult to teach because he wanted to play in the pool than to learn how to swim. Fortunately, Jojo, the swimming instructor, had the cunning idea to train Kulay with other kids instead of teaching him alone and because all the other swimming instructors mix play and learning, my son finally learned how to swim being chased by “sharks”. He started out using the kickboard and yesterday, he started swimming using a floater. Kulay was actually crossing the “big pool” with his floater this morning even without someone holding him. I was not able to see much of his training today because I was making important phone calls. When I returned to the pool, Jojo already removed his floaters and my son is actually swimming without floaters!

I really have to commend my son’s instructor for being so patient with him. The swimming instructors of the team and even some of the students actually helped my son learn how to swim.

We enrolled our son to a swimming class so he can learn how to swim, justify his dark skin (hahahha!) and for our son to gain some health benefits. Swimming is considered as helpful in improving the health of the lungs and the heart. And because swimming improves oxygen circulation, I also believe that swimming is good for my child’s brains. (Read Oxygen for Brain Development and The Role of Oxygen in Brain Function).
