Despite issues on the strengthening peso that has affected the converted value of the remittances that Overseas Filipino Workers send to their families in the Philippines, more Filipino workers are expected to leave the country by 2008. I do not have any supporting document or a statistical report to say this. I am saying this based on the number of my friends and relatives who are set to leave the country by 2008.

My cousin Ivy will be leaving for Italy by the first quarter of 2008. She will be leaving her family for the mean time but she expects to return soon so her whole family will be staying in Italy for good. My cousin Ivy’s parents uncle Roy and auntie Inday have been working in Italy for more than 15 years now.

My son Kulay’s godfather and one of hubby’s most trusted and reliable friends Dj is also set to leave for Dubai by January next year. Of course, I will no longer be surprised to know if relatives who have just passed the nursing board exam will also be leaving to work in other countries by next year most especially that most nursing studes here in the Philippines want to work abroad and earn more money. I wonder too if those nurses in that hospital I used to work with have already flown abroad. Filipino nurses expect to earn more when they work in other countries than when they work in local hospitals. Why earn 8,000 pesos a month when you can earn more than a hundred thousand in one month?

This 2007 alone, my friend and fellow New Mindanao Collegian writer Ryan Pelegrino flew to work as an accountant in the United Kingdom. My college friend Cathy has also went out of the country several times this year to work as an engineer in other Asian countries.

I hope more better paying jobs will be offered in our country so many OFW’s will consider going back to work here in the Philippines. Because of the situation, we are actually losing intellectual and talented Filipino workers to overseas employers.
