I am a mother and I always believe that it is the parents’ duties and privilege to teach their children. Hiring a tutor is acceptable especially when both parents are away, do not have the capacity to teach specialized or very difficult subjects to their children or advised by the school to help the child cope up but what I saw the other day was just plain unacceptable for me: a mother just looking while her child is having a tutoring session with somebody else (who, forgive me, seems to have difficulty pronouncing some of the English words well) and the assignment they were doing? Tracing the dots to form a picture.

Has hiring a tutor become a status symbol in the Philippines these days?
