Solving Poverty in a 3rd World Country

Giving spare change and old clothes to the poor are not the best ways to help the less fortunate. I personally believe that when you are serious in helping the poor, you actually do something to help them become more self reliant and able to provide for their own needs. What do we give to people who are less fortunate  then?

Education. Not being able to go to school and get a diploma is almost synonymous to getting less paying jobs or even not getting a job at all. Unfortunately, hundreds of people most especially in my country are not able to attend school simply because they cannot afford it. If more people are provided with scholarships and financial help to get educated, then perhaps we can do something about poverty.

What you can do: Sponsor or give help to Philippine charities and foundations like bahaybata.org that help provide education for kids.

Jobs. Most Filipinos like me value the importance of education. Most of us are able to attend school but why is it that majority of Filipinos are still poor? Graduates may not be competitive enough to be hired by companies but it seems the more obvious reason is that there are limited companies that provide jobs even to potentially skilled workers. This results in thousands to be underemployed or being unemployed making our graduates, despite their degrees and diplomas financially unstable. If more people invest in job generating companies in my country, then maybe, people can live better lives.

What you can do: Help disseminate job openings you know to unemployed friends and relatives. If you can afford, you can also consider investing in a job generating business.

Consider offering your job vacancies to people in the 3rd world countries. This applies in particular to foreigners looking for service providers. Many Filipinos are qualified to do online work like writing and transcription jobs. You can post your job hiring at jobstreet or craiglist.
