I have just read an article online saying that some experts say that drinking moderately during pregnancy is okay. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in UK has also issued a statement that it is alright for pregnant women to have a small drink of alcohol everyday. In addition to this, another November 15, 2007 article from the HealthWatch website has this title “New Study Says Some Alcohol OK for Pregnant Women“. (you can google for these for more details). Nevertheless, I really disagree with these advices and views. Not that I am a health expert who understands and can see through a hidden spy camera every chemical process that happens when you drink alcohol but because I always believe that unborn children are so delicate and sensitive utmost care and precautions should be observed to protect them, help them survive, and help them be the best that they can.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy—even a drop will have a mother gambling on her child’s health and welfare. What kind of mother will dare giving her baby an alcohol or a beer right after birth? Unborn babies whose mothers are drinking alcohol are drinking alcohol too. This in turn has bad effects to the baby. Infants whose mothers drink excessively while pregnant reportedly have higher risks of having kidney and urinary defects; mental retardation; abnormalities and a lot more undesirable conditions.

when i was preggy with my first child, i was always given a glass of wine to drink for dinner. i always refuse; but i did take a sip of a sparkling wine once or twice while attending some party. here in europe, they dont think that a glass of wine would be bad for preggy.. but still… better safe than sorry di ba.

Yup, women should really think of the child’s safety when they are pregnant (ang hirap talagang magbuntis lol!). One of my friends even got to the point of not eating in any fast food restaurant when she was pregnant.

Just coming from someone in the medical field: It doesn’t harm the baby to have a half a glass of wine or less a day. What really harms the baby is an excess of drinking or getting drunk, when that happens frequently is when the problems occur. Drinking when pregnant is mainly given that blanket ‘no no’ for people who are unable to understand the difference between a glass and a bottle, and who don’t know how much alcohol they can ingest with their specific wieght/height. Because there are so many grey areas it is normally just said that drinking when pregnant is bad, although a woman can still have some alcohol in the early stages of pregnancy.
Also, I don’t think you have the right to make such bold statements when you yourself say that you have no medical training. This is all just your opinion, which is fine to have. Just don’t try to press your opinion off as fact.

    Someone,

I am not pressing my opinion as fact. I am expressing my own reasons why I do not think it is ok to drink alcohol during pregnancy.

As for the last paragraph, yes, I am stating a fact :

Unborn babies whose mothers are drinking alcohol are drinking alcohol too. This in turn has bad effects to the baby. Infants whose mothers drink while pregnant reportedly have higher risks of having kidney and urinary defects; mental retardation; abnormalities and a lot more undesirable conditions.

One mistake though, I failed to mention that the conditions mentioned are potential effects of excessive drinking, not just drinking during pregnancy. I have already edited my post.

Nevertheless, I am maintaining my stand: I do not think it is okay for mothers to drink any amount of alcohol during pregnancy.
